How to properly choose your outdoor stairs ?

Not only does concrete provide a strong and stable staircase, but it also requires low maintenance.  So no need to fret about the weather.  The drawback, you must consider the fact that concrete ends up wearing out with repetitive walking, the steps will become overtime smooth and slippery.  Therefore, you’ll have to restore them by adding cartridge concrete cement every few years.  On the plus side, they are sturdy, so no need for risers! 

Coating and paint   

Here a few pointers to add to your staircase in order to protect it or make it less slippery : 

• A paint that contains silica particles for a better adhesion 
• Frost-resistant outdoor tiles to protect the stairs 
• Terrace tiles for a continuous flowing terrace look directly to the stairs 

• Resin and gravel to protect and make it less slippery 

Lighting 

Choosing your exterior staircase lighting will depend on your needs.  If it’s very dark at night it’s preferable to put more lighting that not enough, safety first!  In addition, lighting adds a little touch of elegance. 

Spotlights embeded in your stairs are not only pretty, but effective.  They ensure continuous light on your staircase althrough the night.

A staircase must be at least 34 inches wide, between 8-¼ inches and 14 inches deep, and between 5 and 7-7/8 inches in height.

A staircase takes up space and materials, things to consider if you want to install a second staircase.  If you have a large patio, it’s a personal choice to add two staircases : one for accessing two different parts of your backyard, or to enter your home through two different entrances.  If you own a duplex, it may be the perfect choice if you desire privacy.
